20 Green Kitchens : How Mother Earth Would Want Your Kitchens To Be

The use of eco-friendly materials and design for the homes that are being erected nowadays is a big hit; not only for the designers, decorators and contractors but also for the clients themselves. Truth be told, more and more people are now conscious in terms of these things and do their best to try and practice the many ways to conserve energy and limit their carbon footprints.

Even when I was in college, we were encouraged to use eco-friendly materials in design projects that we were given – but of course, the use of these materials is not enough. Designing more windows or skylights and clerestories are some of the things you can do at home to conserve energy and have more efficient design – check out the kitchen designs we have collated below for you to see what we are talking about.

5. Contemporary Home in Encino, CA

7. Denmark Contemporary Kitchen

light kitchen

Josina Bergsøe

Like the rest of the house, the kitchen remains light, bright and open to the view of the garden. Quirky Bombo bar chairs add a more modern element to the kitchen space. Under-counter cabinetry keeps the space feeling open, while a few colorful accessories and a modern pendant tie the room to the rest of the home’s style.

8. Victorian Workers Cottage Addition

bay window

Danny Broe Architect

The north-facing bay window fills the space with sunlight. Broe even installed a small window at counter level to capture extra light and illuminate the workspace. The Tasmanian oak flooring added throughout the house has a matte finish for a light and airy feel. The ceiling of the window bay is much lower than the ceiling in the rest of the space, making the window seat feel cozier and more intimate.

Since this home was certified LEED Gold, there are numerous sustainable elements in this kitchen. 12. McGee Salvage House

Eclipse windows above the sink fold away to create an open pass-through with bar seating on the other side. “The patio takes on a whole new function in warmer months,” Best says.

15. Palmerston Kitchen

lime hue

Heffel Balagno Design Consultants

A nice fresh lime hue on the seating also goes well with a modern island design. It is not too bold, but still stands out and looks great with chrome. For a special event, bring in splashes of that color to the top of the island with flowers or a bowl of limes and lemons.

16. Westgarth Timber Project
